Netflix Originals: Exciting Series to Keep an Eye Out For

The release model of Netflix is heavenly manna for TV series fans who love to binge-watch – after all, they release all their series all at once. This is great at times – you get to see the entire season at once, without having to wait for a week to know what happens next. It is bad, too, because you go through the series in no time, having to wait a year or two for it to return and give you a few days of great entertainment – it’s a vicious circle. This doesn’t make Netflix’s originals any less entertaining, though. If you are one of those series fans who can hardly wait to curl up on the couch and dive into your favorite cinematic universe for a whole weekend, here are some new series to look forward to.

V-Wars

Vampire Diaries alum Ian Somerhalder returns to the small screens in V-Wars, a TV adaptation of Jonathan Maberry’s novel series with the same title.

Set in our time, the novel tells the story of how a virus released by the melting Arctic ice rewrites the DNA of humans, triggering dormant genes that turn people into blood-sucking predators with an insatiable hunger. Somerhalder will play Dr. Luther Swann who gets drawn into the conflict between humans and the infected ones when his best friend is infected and begins to transform. Society breaks down, dividing the population into “humans” and “vampires”, two groups that are at war. It’s up to Swann to stop the disease – but things rarely go as planned.

The series will be directed by Brad Turner (24, Homeland, Designated Survivor). Adrian Holmes (Elysium, Cabin in the Woods) and Jacky Lai (Beyond) will have undisclosed roles in the series.

Disenchantment

Matt Groening’s “Disenchantment” is a series pretty much everyone with a taste for Futurama is waiting for sitting at the edge of their seats. And the long wait seems to be over soon: the first ten episodes of the series will be released in August 2018. The story of the series will follow princess Bean, a hard-drinking heiress to the crumbling fantasy kingdom of Dreamland. The princess will be joined in her quests by her feisty elf companion Elfo and her personal demon Luci, and will have to defeat everything from ogres to walruses and “lots of human fools”.

Our Planet

Last but not least, here’s something yummy for documentary fans. This will be the streaming giant’s biggest documentary project to date, exploring the wilderness across the globe. The series is produced by Silverback Films, the company responsible for masterpieces like “Planet Earth,” “Frozen Planet” and “Blue Planet” for the BBC, as well as the beautiful Disneynature films. “Our Planet” will be shot in 4K Ultra HD and will take its viewers to “never-before-filmed” settings, featuring some of the world’s rarest animals in the most precious natural habitats, and cover some of the WWF’s projects in protected areas around the world.

Unfortunately, this series won’t hit the screens before 2019 – but it will offer its viewers a full 4K on-demand experience.
