After-Take: TIMELESS “The Watergate Tape”
Name of the Episode: “The Watergate Tape”
Rufus is trying to readjust from his last mission by spending the morning with his mother. He missed his brother’s basketball game, but cannot sulk because Mason summons him outside. Inside the limo, the man working with Rittenhouse joins Mason. Rufus does not want to be a part of the conversation, but the man has been watching his family; and continues to make threats if Rufus does not cooperate with their plans. Their mission will be to go back to June 28, 1972 to stop Flynn from stealing the missing oval office recordings that Nixon’s secretary deleted. Meanwhile Lucy goes to the house of Benjamin Cahill, her biological father; but cannot bring herself to knock on the door. Her thoughts are interrupted when she is called into the Nixon mission.
The group is given press credentials so they can enter the White House. They are met by war protestors at the front gate. Amongst the chaos, Flynn’s men taser and capture the group before they can meet with security. Flynn takes them into the room where they previously stayed from their Lincoln mission. He has already stolen the missing 18-minute tape and plays it for them because he needs Lucy to retrieve something. Rittenhouse is mentioned in the tapes, which catches everyone off guard. Lucy is to retrieve a document that Rittenhouse needs, and Nixon does not want anyone else to find.
She did not write anything about the document in her future journal; and Flynn has now told the guys they’ve been discussing it over past missions. Flynn releases Rufus and Lucy for them to find the document in five hours, or he will kill Wyatt. Lucy has the idea to call Mark Felt, AKA Deep Throat. While she is calling, Rufus reports to Mason’s contact and is ordered to destroy the document when he finds it. Felt agrees to meet under false pretenses and unwillingly gives up what he knows. He says a crumbled paper was found at the hotel with a drawing of a fist with horns. Rufus knows what the symbol is and they are off to follow the lead.
Back at the hotel, Flynn tries to convince Wyatt of the Rittenhouse conspiracy. He began work with Mason and the time travel equations and noticed the name Rittenhouse constantly coming up in the research. He passed along the info to his NSA pal, and thought it was taken care of. A few nights later, an assassin came into his home, shot Flynn’s wife and daughter. There were too many men for Flynn to actively fight back and he barely made it out alive. Since he escaped, Rittenhouse framed Flynn for the murders and he has been on the run ever since.
His plan now has a clear understanding; if he is able to erase Rittenhouse from history, maybe his family can come back. Rufus follows his lead on a underground black revolution group. His lead may be able to get the document they need to save Wyatt. Except they find the doc is a young woman. She achieved her PhD in history, and is nicknamed Doc. Doc was born into Rittenhouse and left the cause, that’s why she’s on the run to San Diego. 1778 was the start of Rittenhouse and she has memorized every member, which makes her very dangerous. Rufus reports and is still ordered to destroy the Doc, regardless that she is a person. All the secrets come out when Rufus admits to recording the missions. Now they’re both unsure about whom to turn the Doc to.
Rufus and Lucy each call their contact and have them fight each other while they try to save Wyatt. Lucy helps break Wyatt out of the hotel and they’re able to send Doc off safely so she can be reunited with her family. Wyatt assigns Rufus to keep recording them on missions so he can act as a double agent. However, all trust is broken between the team and will take time to repair. Rittenhouse suspects the double cross to have their men killed by Flynn. Rufus refuses to give up any information and everyone goes back to their lives. Wyatt remains obsessed with his wife’s death and Lucy finally confronts her fears. She sees her father, first his son answers the door and she asks for Benjamin Cahill. Once the man comes to the door, viewers realize her father is a part of Rittenhouse! She abandons her conversation and heads home, but he jumps onto a phone call with an unknown person on the other end. The plot just got more complicated, and will only continue in the coming weeks.
Next week, they travel back to 1754, before America was even born. They will need to work together in a hostile environment if they want to succeed. However, during a fight, their lifeboat is damaged and they could become stranded in the past. Will they be able to find their way back to the present or will Lucy change history so they can get home? Stay tuned for another after take!
