At the hospital, Haley, Natalie’s young cancer patient, comes in with possible liver failure. The hospital is over crowded as the doctors are assisting everyone in a timely matter. Meanwhile upstairs, Dr. Latham wants to put a patient back into surgery to fix an aortic tube in his chest.
Haley has acute liver failure, which has lead, her brain to swell. A neurologist will administer a bedside Danny, the young man who came to Med for drug withdrawal symptoms; he is a victim of sex trafficking and wants out. He will not go into the hospital, Reese wants to help, but Dr. Charles is against it. If Danny wants help, he needs to be in the proper clinical setting to be helped. Haley gets through the operation, but she will need to be placed on dialysis until she stabilizes. Natalie puts on a brave face for Haley’s parents, but she is terrified for Haley.
Dr. Charles speaks to Reese to caution her about her involvement with Danny. He had a bad experience with trying to treat a patient. However he wants Reese to be safe, so he calls Detective Lindsay for back up. They talk about the likelihood of rescuing Danny from his situation. Back at the hospital, Haley’s brain swelling lead to the stem, and she passed away as her parents could only watch helplessly. Natalie feels awful about wrongfully giving hope to Haley’s parents. Outside, Reese tries to convince Danny that he could have a better life if he left the trafficking ring. Danny is terrified his handlers will find out what he’s up to, and they will find him.
A few hours later, Danny is wheeled into the emergency room asking for Dr. Reese. He tried cutting out the tracking chip but he cut too deep and started losing too much blood. Danny pleads for the chip to be removed and for help to escape his old way of living. Reese takes the chip and tosses it into the street water to float away and keep Danny safe.
