After-Take: CHICAGO PD “A Night Owl”
Name of the Episode: “A Night Owl”
Beware – the following contains spoilers!!!
Chicago ushers a sobriety checkpoint for the safety of the city, Burgess checks a professor and questions him. She has a gut feeling about this vehicle; he seemingly has nothing to hide, and he opens the trunk. Burgess asks Roman to check out the trunk with her. The intelligence team comes by with a drug-sniffing dog. Large packages of heroin are found under the trunk latch. The professor maintains his innocence, but is placed in handcuffs and read his Miranda Rights. 10 kilograms of heroin are recorded while Voight and Antonio interrogate the professor.
After a background check, they see Adam Aimes is a model citizen. Not even an overdue library book. He teaches in Canada at Windsor University for a class about economic ethics. Lindsay goes to Voight and asks if Burgess can see the case through; since she was the arresting officer on the case. Voight gave her a chance for the team, and she turned it down. He ensures Lindsay will tell Burgess this is merely a field trip. Sergeant Platt offers to assist Officer Roman so he can be a trainer for newly minted officers coming from the academy.
Professor Aimes’ wife and daughter plead with Lindsay that they have the wrong person in custody. Antonio and Al follow a lead for a trap deal and find out a guy named Johnny Z brought the processor’s car in for work. They’re able to get an address and when they arrive, smoke is pouring out of the front door. Down in the basement they find a body burned and tied to a chair. However, that’s not all, they also find a child shot execution style and lying in a puddle of his own blood. The body was burned alive, but the basic description seems to match Johnny Z. He had a girlfriend, Natalie staying in the apartment, so the team rushes to find out the connection to the professor.
Although Platt is willing to help, she is giving Roman a hard time to make him a better candidate. During their patrol, he manages to surprise her when he puts her in a hypothetical life/death situation. Natalie is scared to give any information, but gives a name to cooperate. She says Gregor Torros does construction work, and could be involved. When Atwood and Ruzek go to see Gregor, he says if he talks to the police, people will come after his family. He leaps to his death off the third story construction site. Both Gregor and Johnny emigrated from Armenia, and were even from the same village. Professor Aimes has been renting an apartment under an LLC account; but his family does not know who or why it’s being rented. Antonio and Voight ask Adam about his spare apartment; he does not want to speak anymore without his lawyer. The team goes to investigate, and the real estate agent says shady characters have been visiting lately. Halstead finds boxes of pen pal letters between Adam and about eleven inmates. Adam keeps in contact with the hopes that they will give him companionship once he helps get their life together.
Peter Walker was an inmate who was released two weeks ago, and his former cellmate was Johnny. Adam confesses his love for Peter and tries to take the fall for the drugs. To save Peter’s life, Adam needed to run drugs to get over fifty grand in cash. Peter had a hit on his life once he got out of prison. Once Lindsay and Burgess find Peter, he refuses to cooperate. He lied about the price on his head just to get money so he can get back on his feet. Peter never cared for Adam, he just wanted the quick payday.
Mrs. Aimes rushes to the precinct because somebody has kidnapped her daughter, Pearl. Since her husband owes this group of people a hundred thousand dollars, they are threatening to kill Pearl if they don’t pay or even if she goes to the police. Adam doesn’t believe Peter would deny their relationship and can’t believe what Voight is telling him. Adam offers up information about Peter’s kid brother, Marco. Marco is a drug addict and Peter cares very much for him. Voight brings Marco in to see Peter; Voight threatens to put heroin in Marco’s bag for strike three in exchange for information. Peter folds and gives up Gasper, a construction worker who seems to be keeping Pearl in his construction trailer. The team sees Pearl and kills the guards to get to the trailer. Pearl is rescued and taken to see her father; she finds out he will face about ten years in prison for his actions. Nothing about what she now knows changes the love she has for her father.
At the end of the episode, Halstead is offered a job as a security guard to a marijuana shop. He is paired up with a Marine veteran, Egan; Egan admits to just being released from rehab. It’s a quick paying job and could get some edible benefits to boot. Burgess, Sylvie, Reese and Lindsay meet at Molly’s and discuss how love can make you do crazy things. As she says that, Halstead calls; you can never figure out whom you’ll fall in love with.
