Any move he makes is under a microscope; and he is already feeling the stress.
A teenager, Brett is brought in after a hockey match hit. His dad does not seem to think there is much of a problem, while his wife is more concerned. Brett had suffered a concussion the month before, and he begins to suffer blurry eyesight, so the doctors must rush to diagnosis him. Connor is trying to catch a little nap before he has to assist Dr. Downey with a lung transplant. The patient was a first responder on 9/11 and is suffering from pulmonary fibrosis because of exposure to debris. Zoe comes back to see Will after their date the other night. They agree to go on another date when Will’s shift is over. Natalie and Will are still dealing with tension between them; and it is visible to Maggie as she looks on.
Jack is convinced that because the tests came back negative for a concussion Brett can go home. Brett’s mother, Joan, is worried about the headache he’s had for 2 weeks. Ethan thinks meningitis could be the cause and would be undetected by a scan.Reese is tackled by Brett as he faints forward. Ethan believes that Jack is suffering from the concussions he suffered from his youth, but asks Dr. Charles to consult.
Maggie and April are trying to convince Sarah to complete her residency at Chicago Med. She has not made her final decision, but has until the end of the day. Will and Natalie were taking care of a diabetic patient and disagreed on which tests to order. However, he suddenly stops breathing and a crash cart is ordered. The team is unable to resuscitate Tim, and Will leaves defeated. Meanwhile, Connor and Downey have to figure out a plan to fix their patients heart valve before transplanting the lungs.
The tests show cerebritis is the cause of Brett’s problems. It’s more serious than expected, but Jack has not told Brett anything about the effects he’s going through. Jack only wants Brett to be selected for college hockey and maybe the pros one day.
Will lashes out at Natalie when he sees she gave vitamin K to their patient Tim. He believes that was the culprit of his death; but he is more upset that anything he does will not fix the mess of the hospital being sued.
Brett discloses to Reese that he constantly gets nosebleeds all the time; so, Reese goes to Ethan to help diagnose. He has a condition that could cause him to suffer massive bleeding or infections if hit the wrong way. It’s their opinion that Brett quit hockey, but Jack wants a second opinion. An autopsy is done on Tim, and Will is present for the results. It’s discovered that an ruptured aortic aneurysm was the cause of death. There was nothing anyone could have done to save him.
Will talks to Zoe about his problems from the day, and she suggests they rain check their dinner; she understands the fight was with Natalie and he needs to sort through it.Downey guides Connor through the lung transplant, but possibly due to his lack of sleep, Connor trims one of the valves too deep. The valve begins to spray, but once the valve is clamped, Downey asks Connor to take the lead. The transplant is a success and Connor gains more experience from Downey.
Reese sees that Brett posts on social media he will be back on the ice within the week despite the hospital visit. Reese decides to pursue pathology; she cannot deal with trying to help patients and they don’t take her advice. She has not fully decided which hospital she will continue with, but it does not seem like she will stay in Chicago.
Will goes to Natalie to apologize; and she cannot understand why he keeps picking on her. He doesn’t treat anyone else like he treats her. He simply wonders out loud, “Don’t you know?” and kisses her at the employee lockers. Neither of them says anything and Will exits back to the main floor. At the end of the episode, Connor meets up with Sam at Molly’s. He acknowledges their relationship has been strained since he started working with Downey. So, they decide to end whatever they had so he wouldn’t have to choose between the two of them.
