My Take On….THE MILLERS on CBS
If I’m being honest, and that’s all I want to do for you is be honest, THE MILLERS on CBS (premiering tonight at 8:30/7:30c) could be alternately called “When Bad Comedies Happen to Good People.” Will Arnett plays Nathan Miller, son of Carol (Margo Martindale) and Tom (Beau Bridges), brother to Debbie (Jayma Mays who replaced Mary Elizabeth Ellis when the pilot went to series), brother-in-law to Adam (Nelson Franklin, replacing Michael Rappaport), and best friend to Deweyne (JB Smoove). He is an on-camera reporter for the local news, and he’s recently gone through a divorce that he’s kept hidden from his parents. When they find out, Tom decides he wants out of his marriage, too, and so mom moves in with son, and dad moves in with daughter. From there, hijinks ensue.
Created by Greg Garcia (RAISING HOPE), and starring one of the funniest men alive (Arnett), I had high hopes that the show would be able to capture the greatness of other Garcia shows, but aside from a cussing TRACE! (Garcia’s son, who frequently guests on HOPE), ultimately nothing about the show was what I wanted. Thin concept to begin with (really, you kept your divorce from your parents for 3 months and from the sounds of it, these parents call like, 12 times a day), aided only by some farting and age jokes at the expense of EMMY WINNERS* like Martindale and Bridges, and by the end, I was just left feeling relieved it was all over. If there’s any bright side, however? I can’t get “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life” out of my head, and that’s a fun ear-worm to live with!
*Martindale for JUSTIFIED and Bridges for a variety of miniseries and made for TV events.
